The Town That Took the Courthouse

Tree Service in Bay Minette covers the county seat of Baldwin County, and the town has a story about how it got that title. The state authorized moving the seat from Daphne in 1900, but Daphne resisted. On the night of October 11-12, 1901, Bay Minette residents moved the county records from Daphne themselves, and the seat has been here ever since. Bay Minette incorporated as a city in 1907 and had 8,107 residents in 2020. It sits on high ground about 5 miles east of the Mobile and Tensaw river valley, at about 272 feet. That is higher than almost anywhere else we work.

Higher ground, different trees

Away from the bay, north Baldwin is pine and mixed hardwood country. Lots in and around Bay Minette often have tall loblolly and longleaf pines, plus oaks, sweetgum and hickory. The higher, better-drained ground means fewer trees fail from soggy roots than on the coast. Tall pines on high ground still catch the wind, and lightning strikes on the tallest trees are common in summer storms. A pine hit by lightning often shows a spiral strip of bark torn down the trunk. Bark beetles find those trees quickly, and Alabama Extension advises removing infested pines promptly to slow the spread to nearby trees.

Further from the coast, still in the storm track

Bay Minette is far enough inland that hurricanes arrive weaker than on the coast, but not harmless. During Hurricane Sally in 2020, a gauge 11 miles north of town logged 5.36 inches of rain, much less than the 10 to 17 inches farther south. Baldwin EMC, which runs its North Baldwin office in Bay Minette, still lost power to about 95% of its service area. Trees with old wounds, dead tops or a lean toward the house are worth a look before storm season.

Mix of town and rural lots

Census QuickFacts lists a 60.5% owner-occupied rate in Bay Minette and a median home value of $173,000. The city covers about 17 square miles of land, so properties range from in-town lots near the courthouse to rural tracts on the edges. In town, most jobs are removals and pruning near houses and lines. On larger lots, owners often add driveway clearing, fence-row cleanup and storm cleanup to the list. We price each item separately so you can choose.

Bay Minette Questions

Lightning hit a pine in my yard. Will it die?

Often, yes, especially if the bark is torn in a long strip down the trunk. Even trees that survive the strike tend to draw bark beetles. If it can reach the house or a neighbor's, plan to remove it before it dries out and gets brittle.

Can you clear an overgrown driveway on a rural lot?

Yes. We cut back limbs and saplings along the sides and raise the canopy so trucks and emergency vehicles can get through. We can chip the brush or leave it piled in the woods.

Is stump grinding worth it for pines?

In lawns and beds, usually yes, since pine stumps take years to rot and get in the way of mowing. In the woods, we can cut them low and leave them.

Who handles a tree on the line from the road to my house?

Call your electric provider first so the line can be made safe; Baldwin EMC's call center is (251) 989-6247. After that, we can take care of the tree itself and the cleanup.

What are the signs of a dying pine?

Needles turning yellow, then red or brown, often from the top down; pitch tubes or reddish dust on the bark; and bark coming loose. Once a pine is mostly brown, it is usually too late, and a dead pine near the house should come down.
