Less Is More With Palms
Palm tree trimming in Mobile is mostly a matter of knowing what to leave. Sabal palms, the native cabbage palm, are rated highly wind resistant by University of Florida researchers, and a sabal with a full, round head of fronds is better equipped for a hurricane than one cut back to a few spears. Yet the hurricane cut, trimming a palm down to a narrow tuft at the top, is still common along the coast. UF/IFAS Extension says that pencil-point pruning weakens a palm's ability to withstand high wind.
What comes off and what stays
Extension guidance is to remove fronds that are completely brown and dead, fronds that are a hazard or touching a structure, and flower and fruit stalks, which drop messy fruit on pools, patios and cars. Fronds that are green, even partly green, are still feeding the palm. Older fronds store potassium and magnesium that the palm moves into new growth, so cutting them off early can lead to deficiencies and a thin, weak head. The old rule about not cutting above the nine and three o'clock positions was meant as a limit, not a target.
Freeze-damaged palms
Several palms planted in Mobile yards are near the cold edge of their range, and hard freezes test them. Mobile went without any snow from 1996 to 2017, then got up to 8.5 inches on January 21, 2025. Along the Gulf Coast that winter, extension agents reported serious damage to Canary Island date palms after several nights in the teens, and advised waiting, sometimes until late summer, before deciding whether a damaged palm will recover. A palm with a brown head is not necessarily dead. We look at the spear, the newest emerging frond, before recommending removal.
Removing a palm
Sometimes a palm has to go: it is dead, it is planted too close to the house, or it is a tall Washingtonia leaning over a roof. Palm removal is usually simpler than removing a hardwood of the same height, but tall palms still have to be taken down in pieces where there is no room to drop them. The stump can be ground out like any other.
How we climb
We do not use climbing spikes on palms that are staying. Spikes punch holes in the trunk that never heal, because palms cannot close wounds the way hardwoods do, and those holes stay open to decay for the life of the palm.

Palm Tree Trimming Questions
How often should palms be trimmed in Mobile?
Most landscape palms only need trimming once a year, to remove fully dead fronds and seed stalks. Fast-growing or fruit-heavy palms near pools or patios may need it twice.
How much does palm tree trimming cost in Mobile?
HomeGuide's national figures run about $75 to $400 for a palm 15 to 30 feet tall and $150 to $900 for one 30 to 60 feet tall. Several palms in one visit usually cost less each. Your written estimate is the price.
Should I cut my palm way back before a hurricane?
No. UF/IFAS Extension says hurricane cuts weaken a palm's ability to withstand high wind. Remove only dead fronds and loose seed stalks that could become projectiles.
My palm turned brown after the freeze. Is it dead?
Not necessarily. Extension agents advise waiting, sometimes into late summer, to see whether a new spear emerges green. Removing it too soon may mean losing a palm that would have recovered.
